Aqua World Oarai has begun exhibiting the "freshwater jellyfish" for the first time. As its name suggests, the freshwater jellyfish is a rare species of jellyfish that lives in freshwater ponds and lakes.

We recently received a report from someone in Ibaraki Prefecture who had discovered a freshwater jellyfish. Our jellyfish keeper visited the site and collected it. Thanks to their cooperation, we were able to bring it to the aquarium in good condition.

Freshwater jellyfish (Luciola cruciata) are not found in the same place every year; they suddenly appear in freshwater ponds and other bodies of water, and then disappear within a few days to a few weeks. Although freshwater jellyfish have been found in Ibaraki Prefecture before, our aquarium has never exhibited them until now, making this our first time displaying them.

The freshwater jellyfish currently on display at our aquarium has a bell about 1 cm in size, and even when fully grown, it only reaches about 2 cm, making it a tiny jellyfish about the same size as a 1-yen coin. Please take this opportunity to visit our exhibit of the elusive and rare freshwater jellyfish and observe how it differs from other jellyfish.
