"Nameless Octopus" on display
Aqua World Ibaraki Oarai Aquarium regularly conducts surveys to collect biological life off the coast of Muroto, Kochi Prefecture. In the most recent survey, held in November 2024, a rare deep-sea octopus was collected and is now on display.

This octopus is called the "red striped octopus" due to the characteristics of its body surface, and although its existence has been known for some time, there are few opportunities to collect it and detailed research has not progressed, so its official classification is unknown and it is an octopus without a name, as it has not yet been given a scientific name (official international name) or standard Japanese name (Japanese name).

The tentative name "Akashima Octopus" is derived from its distinctive red striped pattern, and based on its morphological characteristics it is believed to be classified as a different species from the commonly known common octopus. The name does not mean "Akashi True Octopus (Akashi's Common Octopus)."

The octopus still doesn't have a name, but we look forward to the day when it will have an official name, and we will continue to observe it with the aim of keeping it in captivity at the aquarium for a long period of time in order to unravel its mysterious ecology. Please come and experience the diverse world of living things through this nameless octopus.
*Exhibition may be canceled depending on the condition of the creatures. Please note.
