We gave a presentation on our research into grey nurse shark breeding at the American Elasmobranch Society!
At the invitation of the American Elasmobranch Society, which was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA from July 2024th to 7th, 10 (local time), two of our shark keepers participated and gave a research presentation on our successful in-aquarium breeding of the grey nurse shark, a type of shark, in 14, which was the first such attempt in Japan.
The conference where the presentation was made was the American Elasmobranch Society, a shark-related conference held annually across the United States. This conference is held as a joint conference for general fish, amphibian, and reptile research, and is attended by researchers and aquarium staff from not only the United States, but also from all over the world, including South America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. It is a large-scale conference with over 400 presentations in total, and is called the Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists (JMIH).
The experience gained from this presentation and visit will be utilized in our shark breeding research, leading to further shark breeding and exhibits at the aquarium. We hope to create opportunities to share this information with you at future exhibits and events.
Aqua World Oarai is currently holding a special program called "Backyard Tour" every day. You can see what goes on behind the scenes at the aquarium with explanations from the zookeepers!
